Nothing Is the End of the World
KVPAC Opens Fall Theatre Season with Uncensored Play About the Nature of Judgement and our Human Evolution
Katy, Texas (August 31, 2016) – KVPAC’s Fall season opens with the dark comedy Nothing Is the End of the World (Except for the End of the World)which performs next weekend, September 9th – 11th. This KVPAC Uncensored Production features student actors from several Katy ISD schools including Katy High School, Cinco Ranch High School, Seven Lakes High School, Faith West Academy, Westchester Academy, Seven Lakes Junior High School and Beckendorff Junior High School.
“It is exciting to be the first live-theatre event in the Katy area this season,” says the show’s Director, Denver Danyla. “It’s really cool that many of these actors represent several different schools coming together to produce a show that is current, relevant and edgy. Most of my actors tell me that they can either thoroughly relate to their individual characters, or now have a better understanding of fellow students who are nothing like themselves. That is something quite powerful.” This marks Danyla’s fourth show to direct at KVPAC. “Even though acting has always been my life’s goal and educational background since I began directing after college,” explains Danyla, who holds a BFA in Acting from Azusa Pacific University. “I found that this is where I really believe is the best place for me.”
Erin Kuykendall of Cinco Ranch High School plays Emma in the production. “The more I got to understand my character in the show, it was almost eerie how similar she is to me,” remarks Kuykendall. “She is very honest and has trouble dealing with her own anxiety. The way she copes with her stress is to sing – exactly what I do with my stress. I am either singing or listening to music as often as I can to help me deal with the stresses of being a teenager these days.”
“This obviously has been a stretch for me as an actor,” says Joshua Duchesne of Katy High School, who plays one of the visiting A.I.s (artificially intelligentandroids) in the show. “It is challenging to be a character that has no emotions while still keeping Godfrey (the A.I. he portrays on stage) full of energy and interesting to watch.”
Nothing Is the End of the World (Except for the End of the World) is written by Bekah Brunstetter and takes the audience on a journey, in the near-distant future, to a progressive New York City charter school that becomes the first to welcome artificially intelligent students. However, new A.I. students, Olive and Godfrey, receive a chilly welcome from the already self-conscious and stressed-out members of the Junior class. When a reality show swoops in to capture this social experiment on camera, the priorities and moralities of the student body are turned inside-out. At times both droll and touching, this dark new play questions how we reconcile the thin line between our ever-improving technologies and what it means to be human. Show times are Friday, September 9th at 7:00pm, Saturday, September 10th at 2:00pm and 7:00pm and Sunday, September 11th at 2:00pm.
