Thanksgiving Day and the three-day Black Friday weekend are now considered the busiest time of the year for Plumbers and Plumbing Contractors by the National Plumbing Association.  In fact, plumbing calls increase 21 percent over any other Thursday through Sunday period during the year, making it the #1 Day for Plumbers from coast to coast.  Our expert provides free, helpful tips on how to avoid costly plumbing disasters and ruining the holiday spirit.

Plumbing Manger Jacob Gibson, with ABACUS Air conditioning, Plumbing, and Electrical said ”Business on Black Friday increases 47 to 50 percent compared to an ordinary Friday."

Our expert provides free, helpful tips on how to avoid costly plumbing disasters and ruining the holiday spirit.

  • Avoid putting stringy, fibrous or starchy waste in the garbage disposal, like poultry skins, celery, fruit and potato peels.
  • Never put Coffee grinds in the drain -it hardens easily and clogs quickly.
  • Never put pasta or bread- they expand easily.
  • Never flush cotton balls-or Paper towels in the toilet, they do not dissolve
  • Wait 10-15 minutes between showers so water has time to drain if you are hosting more people than usual at home.
  • Don't flush cotton balls, swabs, hair or facial scrub pads down the toilet because they don't dissolve.
  • Try using cold water instead of hot water so grease solidifies and is flushed through a pipe. Otherwise, the grease could stick to the pipe.
  • Ice cubes can help clean orators and drains
  • Don't pour cooking oils or fats down the drain, they build up in the pipes like "clogged arteries." Wipe off greasy plates and pots with paper towels and then throw away the towels.
  • When you put food in the garbage disposal, make sure it's already running. Don't turn it on after it's already full.
  • Facial scrubs never should be flushed down the toilet because they can't dissolve. If lots of small children will be running around, lock up the cabinets and keep an eye on the kids so they don't try to flush inappropriate objects.
  • If you have a problematic drain, take care of it before guests arrive for the holidays. ABACUS says it often gets calls from people who had partially clogged drains
