The giving spirit abounds at Houston Can Academy’s Hobby campus this month.  Students and administrators at the charter high school are giving and receiving in many ways this holiday season.  A canned food drive for the local chapter of St. Vincent de Paul is currently underway.  Members of the school’s student council are leading the collection and encouraging each student to bring at least three canned food items or packaged dry goods to help fill the shelves for others.  The food drive collection will end December 18th and the school will host a pizza party for the most cans collected by a class.

Many of the students need coats and sweaters for the cooler winter months and school faculty are coordinating a collection of new and gently used outerwear. “Our students are very aware of the needs of others, but many of these young adults need resources and basic necessities and this is where we can help them,” said Dr. James Troutman, principal of Houston Can Academy Hobby. “Knowing that our students have something warm to wear when temperatures dip is important to our school family.”

To make the holiday season merrier, the school is also simultaneously sponsoring a toy drive for the children of students. Unwrapped toys for all ages and adult outer wear in all sizes will be accepted at the campus located at 9020 Gulf Freeway, Houston, TX 77017 or call 832.379.4226.  Donations will be accepted through December 18.
