Boxes of perishable and nonperishable food items were distributed. Some food items included canned goods, pasta, marinara sauce, dry beans, fruit, vegetables, milk and cereal.
Houston Food Bank’s School Market program serves the food-insecure population in Houston and provides them with nutritious food to live a healthy lifestyle. The food is delivered in a mobile, a refrigerated pantry on wheels with the capacity to serve up to 300 households. Houston Food Bank serves 18 southeast Texas counties.
“Many of our students rely on the school as their primary food source for breakfast and lunch and are in need of food to take home with them to their families,” said Leon Gilmore, Principal of Texans Can Academies - Houston North. “We are grateful to Houston Food Bank for helping to provide hunger relief to our students, their families and the rest of our community.”
Around 86 percent of Texans Can Academies students live below the poverty line. Texans Can Academies aims to ensure each of their students have the opportunity to pursue their dreams while removing barriers, such as food insecurity, that keep them from attaining their education.
Cars were lined up for the distribution at 1 p.m., and food was distributed to more than 60 families in the community.
Five Texans Can Academies staff members, two Texans Can Academies - Houston North students, a community volunteer and a food bank representative all volunteered their time to help distribute the food.
Texans Can Academies is a unique network of 14 dropout recovery schools located in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, Houston and San Antonio. The schools are tuition-free, open enrollment, public high schools of choice serving students who have struggled in a traditional high school setting. To date, more than 171,759 youth have been given a second chance at life with the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
